Cynthia’s Fine Yarn & Gifts
On our drive up to Mackinac Island last week we did pass through Mackinaw City but we were running a bit late and decided to head straight for the ferry. After returning from the island on Wednesday we made a stop at Cynthia’s Fine Yarn & Gifts. In fact Cynthia’s is only a few blocks down from the Arnold Ferry Dock.
The store is in an old teal colored house with a pretty flower garden out front. It is right on S. Huron Avenue across from the Hamilton Beachfront Hotel. That is the Knitting Scotsman standing on the front porch.
We were greeted right away when we walked in the store. This store is jam packed full of yarn and gift items. They have a whole room in the front full of sock yarn. I was super happy to explore in there. My husband was impressed by the tree of Malabrigo. The store clerks did not make fuss over his knitter status, but the other customer shopping in the store just couldn’t get over it. In fact the clerks sort of left my husband and my daughter alone.
The other woman shopping had two young girls with her, probably between 8 and 12. They both received a gift from the clerk at the register for behaving so well in the store. My daughter did not receive anything. Not sure what was up with that, as she was her normal sweet self in the yarn store. Hmmm, anyway.
I did end up buying two skeins of sock yarn. Shock I know. I got a skein of Cynthia’s Hand Painted Sport Weight in their Passion Fruit colorway. I’m thinking a matching pair of socks for Gwen and I.
I also picked up a skein of Trekking Pro Natura. This is a fingering weight yarn that is a wool/bamboo blend. I didn’t notice until after we left that the ball band was marked undyed, so I am guessing the store hand painted it. I wish I would have noticed it there to ask. The colors are very pretty.
Overall this was a very nice store. I would definitely shop there again. They had a nice selection of wool, cotton, and sock yarn. They also appeared to have a small classroom in the back of the store, but we did not ask about classes. Next we traveled to Dutch Oven Yarn Shop.
